Actress and former fiancee settle parenting issue

Tennessee residents may be interested to know that on September 17, actress Uma Thurman and her ex-fiance settled a child custody matter in Manhattan Supreme Court. The judge in the case praised the couple for putting the needs of the child ahead of their feelings for each other. The matter began when Thurman's ex-fiance requested to spend more time with their 3-year-old daughter.

As a result of the settlement, the couple signed a three-year agreement outlining how they would jointly raise their child. Other terms of the settlement were kept confidential. The couple married in 2008, split for a time in 2009 and their child was born in July 2012.

In a child custody case, the parents themselves may be able to come to an agreement as to how the child will be raised. Often times, courts prefer that the parents come to their own arrangement as it may prevent future problems. Although the parents may not have any romantic feelings for each other, working together to raise their children is often in a child's best interest. In many cases, a parent will obtain the help of an attorney to help move the settlement process along.

If informal negotiations do not lead to a favorable outcome for a parent, the matter will likely end up in court. A judge will review the case to determine what custody arrangement would be in the child's best interest. The judge may solicit input from the child if the judge believes that the child is mature enough to express an opinion on the matter. After gathering relevant information, a custody order may be modified or it may remain as currently ordered.
