Why child support is essential in Tennessee

More than one-third of children born today are born to parents who aren't married and end up being raised by one parent. This makes child support an important part of rearing the child. Children who are raised by one parent tend to be poor since single parents often only have one income to support a household, and that income tends to be lower due to these individuals normally having lower levels of education.

Not only does child support help to provide children the resources they need, which leads to fewer behavioral problems and better cognitive development, fathers who pay child support tend to also be more involved in their children's lives. This indicates that child support may fulfill both financial and emotional needs for many kids.

The Child Support Enforcement Program was developed about 40 years ago to help single parents obtain the support they needed. The program has been very successful, but many people aren't aware of it, so while it has been helpful for families who participate, the rates have been steadily dropping. In 2004, about 60 percent of eligible parents had a support agreement, but as of 2014, the number had dropped to about 49 percent.

Child support payments can be essential for single parents who normally have to provide for their family with one income, and the additional resources can dramatically reduce their stress and make it much easier to make ends meet. However, even if someone has a child support agreement, the payments may not be forthcoming. An attorney can often assist in seeking court enforcement of the order through wage garnishment or other means.
