Custody dispute resolved in favor of Chris Brown

Tennessee residents may know that the hip-hop singer, songwriter and performer Chris Brown has had his fair share of legal problems. The 27-year-old rapper was ordered to perform community service and was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to domestic violence charges in 2009, but Brown had a better day in court on Aug. 12 when a family law judge ruled in his favor after hearing arguments made by the mother of his 2-year-old daughter in a contentious child custody dispute.

The woman claimed during the hearing that Brown was a substance abuser who was not fit to be left alone with his daughter. She asked the judge to order Brown to take a drug test and amend the couple's joint custody arrangement to award her sole custody of the child. She also asked for any time Brown spent with his daughter to be supervised. While Brown has certainly had problems in the past, media reports indicate that these issues have not prevented him from becoming a devoted and caring father.

The judge was not swayed by the woman's arguments, and he denied all of her motions while leaving the existing custody arrangements, which Brown to spend 12 days with his daughter each month, intact. He also ordered the woman to pay Brown's legal costs. Reports indicate that the woman subsequently dropped a separate petition that had asked for the $2,500 Brown must pay each month in child support to be increased to $16,000.

Inflammatory allegations are not uncommon in child custody disputes, and experienced family law attorneys may encourage their clients to remain calm and not respond angrily to personal attacks. Attorneys may point out that judges make custody and visitation decisions with the best interests of the child in mind, and they could suggest that accusations of violent or indecent behavior are best refuted with strong evidence of concerned and diligent parenting.
