Jeremy Renner and ex-wife in child support dispute

Tennessee residents may be interested to know that according to actor Jeremy Renner's former wife, he owes more than $48,000 in past due child support. Court documents filed by the woman claim that the 45-year-old has refused to pay $1,600 a month in preschool tuition for their 3-year-old daughter. The couple were officially divorced in 2015, and the actor was ordered to pay $13,000 a month in child support.

Renner has denied that he is behind on his child support obligations. In a statement, a representative said that he had provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in support in the past year to help care for the child. The couple has joint custody of the girl, and his rep also said that the preschool tuition costs were not part of the divorce decree.

Parents who are engaged in a child support dispute may find it best to try to settle the matter on their own first. However, if this does not work, it may be necessary to talk with their respective attorneys who may be able to help both sides come to an agreement without litigation that may protect the best interests of the child.

If a court order is in place, payments must be made until a judge issues a modification. Failure to do so for any reason may result in financial and other legal consequences. However, parents may be able to have support payments altered if a financial hardship occurs because of a job loss or any other legitimate reason. It is important to remember, however, that even if a modification is issued, it is prospective only and has no effect on any amounts that may be in arrears.
